On February 23, 2004, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to hear WLF's appeal of a case involving overcriminalization of normal business activities that can have dire consequences for all companies, officers, and employees. WLF's petition, filed in October 2003, asked the High Court to review (and ultimately overturn) draconian eight-year prison sentences for small business owners for allegedly violating minor regulations. The three U.S.-based seafood importers were charged by U.S. authorities with violating supposed Honduran regulations regarding the sale of undersized lobsters. A divided U.S. appeals court upheld the sentences, even though the government of Honduras keeps insisting that the regulations supposedly violated had never actually gone into effect. WLF's clients will begin serving their prison sentences soon. WLF is considering seeking a Presidential pardon.
