Case Detail

Reno v. American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Comm.
On July 16, 1998, WLF filed a brief in the U.S. Supreme Court, urging the Court to overturn the lower federal court decisions that for more than a decade have frustrated efforts by the federal government to deport illegal aliens suspected of engaging in fundraising for a foreign terrorist organization. WLF argued that raising funds for known terrorist groups (in this case, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, which employs violence in an effort to undermine the peace accord between Israel and the PLO) does not constitute speech protected by the First Amendment. WLF also argued that the lower courts should never even have agreed to hear the case, which was filed by eight aliens while administrative deportation proceedings were pending against them. WLF argued that the eight should have been required to await conclusion of those proceedings before seeking relief in the courts.
